Big Writing & Big Talking

What is BIG Writing and BIG Talking?

Both Big Writing and Big Talking are initiatives which successfully enable children to make progress with written work. Big Writing is a highly detailed and planned lesson which takes place on Friday mornings across the school. The children begin with VCOP (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation) activities and this leads to the children completing an extended piece of writing.

Why do we have Big Talking Homework?

At St George's we believe that working in partnership with parents to support the learning of every child is vital. The idea of Talking Homework is for the family to discuss the topic published for that week to enable the children to begin to formulate ideas for their written work. Speaking and listening are a great aid to effective and interesting writing.

This need only be a five minute chat on the relevant topic, but it does help to form ideas and develop vocabulary for children.

What topics do we cover?

We learn about a great variety of topics to interest the children, these include:
  • Snow adventure
  • Pancake instructions
  • Haunted house
  • Poetry
  • Character description
... and many more
