Public Sector Equality Duty
Our commitment to equality
At St George's Church of England Infant School, we believe that every child is unique, valued and deserving of the opportunity to flourish.
Our Christian vision, Let Your Light Shine (Matthew 5:16), underpins our commitment to ensuring that everyone in our school community is treated with dignity, kindness and respect. Our values of courage, commitment, community, compassion and love guide the way we work together to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome, safe and able to achieve their full potential.
We are committed to meeting our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED). We recognise, celebrate and respect difference and work to ensure that no individual is disadvantaged or excluded because of a protected characteristic.
The Public Sector Equality Duty requires schools to have due regard to three key aims:
1. Eliminate discrimination, harassment and victimisation
We work to ensure that all members of our school community are treated fairly and respectfully. We challenge discriminatory attitudes and behaviour and take concerns seriously.
2. Advance equality of opportunity
We aim to remove barriers to learning and participation, making reasonable adjustments where necessary and providing appropriate support and challenge so that every child can flourish.
3. Foster good relations
We promote understanding, kindness and respect between people from different backgrounds. Through our curriculum, collective worship, relationships and wider school experiences, we encourage children to appreciate and celebrate differences.
How we promote equality at St George's
Equality and inclusion are embedded throughout our everyday practice and are not treated as separate from teaching, learning and school life.
We demonstrate our commitment in a number of ways:
Inclusive teaching and learning
- Providing an ambitious and accessible curriculum that recognises the different starting points, strengths and needs of our children.
- Identifying barriers to learning and providing appropriate support, adaptations and challenge.
- Monitoring children's progress and attainment to identify where additional support may be needed.
- Ensuring that all children have opportunities to participate in learning and wider school experiences.
Supporting individual needs
- Working closely with families and external professionals to understand and respond to children's individual needs.
- Providing support for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
- Supporting children who speak English as an additional language (EAL).
- Providing targeted support for disadvantaged pupils through our Pupil Premium provision.
- Working with families through our Family Liaison provision to identify and address barriers to engagement and participation.
Promoting respect and understanding
- Providing a curriculum that helps children understand and appreciate different cultures, backgrounds, beliefs and experiences.
- Using books, resources and learning experiences that reflect the diversity of our wider community.
- Promoting kindness, respect and positive relationships through our Christian values and collective worship.
- Challenging stereotypes, prejudice and discriminatory behaviour.
- Encouraging children to develop a sense of belonging, responsibility and respect for others.
Accessibility and participation
- Making reasonable adjustments to support disabled pupils and other members of our school community.
- Reviewing our school environment and accessibility arrangements.
- Working with families to ensure that children can access learning, visits, activities and wider school opportunities.
Further information about our provision can be found on our Inclusion, Accessibility, SEND, Pupil Premium, EAL and Family Liaison pages.
Monitoring and reviewing equality
We recognise that promoting equality requires ongoing reflection and action.
The Headteacher, Senior Leadership Team and Governing Body monitor our work through the review of relevant school information, including:
- Pupil progress and attainment.
- Attendance and participation.
- SEND and disadvantaged pupil provision.
- Behaviour, bullying and safeguarding information, including any reported discriminatory incidents.
- Access to the curriculum and wider school opportunities.
- Feedback from pupils, parents and staff.
This information helps us identify potential barriers, evaluate the effectiveness of our provision and determine where further action may be required.
Our equality information is reviewed and updated annually. Our Equality Objectives are reviewed regularly, with new objectives published at least every four years.
Our Equality Objectives: 2026–2030
To further strengthen our commitment to equality, inclusion and opportunity, we have identified the following objectives for the period 2026–2030.
